timeline highlights
Since its inception in 1888 with just six charter members, our church has undergone six name changes and numerous building expansions and renovations. Today, we proudly uphold our rich legacy while confidently embracing a future brimming with promise.
First Baptist Church of Warren, Texas, was originally established in 1888 as Missionary Baptist Church. Bro. Ben Johnson served as the first pastor.
The earliest handwritten minutes, dated October 15, 1908, noted that Bro. D. D. Corban was appointed as the pastor, with the church participating in Fifth Sunday meetings and Associational gatherings, while services were held monthly in a community facility on Friday and Saturday evenings, and Sundays from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
On June 12, 1910, historical records show that plans for a new church building were in progress at the current site, which would eventually house an auditorium and five classrooms that were later donated to become the Fellowship Hall and Church office.
Prayer meetings began on Friday nights in 1915, but the exact period when these gatherings dissolved is not known.
On March 5, 1921, the charter members W. P. Edding and wife, P. M. Green, Lola Pickle, Ella Goolsbee, and N. J. Philmon restructured and named the church Smyrna Baptist Church of Christ, with Sunday School being introduced in July of the same year.
On August 25, 1923, the name of the church was changed to Warren Missionary Baptist Church.
The practice referred to as the Lord’s Supper was officially instituted within the community in 1926.
By 1929, the church enhanced its capabilities by installing electricity, utilizing four small drop bulbs at a monthly expense of $1.
The New Bethel Association was mentioned in the church minutes.
Bro. B. F. Harper's resignation as pastor was declined by the church, and during a revival in August 1931, twenty-five new members joined the congregation.
Baptisms were held at Turkey Creek, located north of Warren-Fred Road, where women hung quilts on nearby trees for privacy while changing, and men and boys used the woods for a similar purpose after the ceremonies.
A parsonage was built in 1937 from used lumber from old houses in Village Mills.
In 1941, the church hired its first full-time pastor, I. W. Fulgham, built a parsonage for $650, and received a deed for a brick building, previously used for school classes, from Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Goolsbee, which included an auditorium and five classrooms to accommodate over 100 congregants.
On November 25, 1945, the church was designated as First Baptist Church of Warren, although there are no records of a vote on the name, and it is noted that a new annex was added in the same year.
A second new annex was constructed, and on August 27, George McRay Standley and Ola Jean Swearingen celebrated the first recorded wedding at First Baptist Church, while most couples at the time chose to marry in their homes.
A third annex to the church was built and the auditorium was remodeled.
In 1956, the church made a decision to buy a cabin for $10,000 at the East Texas Baptist Encampment in Newton, Texas.
In November 1960, the church commenced a building program.
In Spring 1978, a new education building was completed for $49,960, while the Fellowship Hall underwent a remodel costing $14,040.
In 1999, the church entered into a new building project named “Building with a Vision.”
The new sanctuary was completed this year, and an ingathering service along with additional fundraising events took place.
By January 2012, the church underwent a complete remodel, including a new sanctuary and a Family Center, thanks to the efforts of the Volunteer Christian Builders and the dedicated church community.
During the weekend of September 28-29, 2013, First Baptist Church marked its 125th anniversary. The festivities on Saturday included a meet-and-greet, guided facility tours, ministry displays, and a fish fry for dinner. The celebration continued on Sunday with a special worship service led by Bro, Troy Richardson and a barbecue luncheon.
